June 13-19: 2nd Week-The Samples
This week you were actively involved with sampling.
What was the expereince of sampling like? Did it execute the way you expected?
How was the experience of sampling insightful for incorporating authentic research in the classroom?

Sampling was Great!!! We had the opportunity to take a mini tour of the Waste Water Treatment Plant when we went to retrieve Activated Sludge for our experiment. We met a man with a great southern accent who actually helped us get our samples.
The smell at the plant was difficult for me, but the experience was one of a kind. I am very glad I got the chance to take samples there, otherwise I may never have gone to a Waste Water Treatment Plant.
As for the experiment this week, I’ve come to realize that it continually changes as I learn new things. Some things changed out of time constrants and some things changed as we realized what would really contribute to our question.
We altered concentrations, testing times, and sample sites because we got into the actual experiement and had a better idea of what was necessary and what was not. This week has lead to some frustration but I really feel as if I am going through the scientific method as a scientist does.
I’m getting results, altering my plan, and getting feedback from colleagues. This is what science is all about!!!

Well this week has been very different than the previous week. Hal and I really enjoyed collecting the fish and both of us were not looking forward to going back to the lab. For the most part our project is running smoothly. It seems as if the results we are getting are confusing, but we really haven’t taken the time to sit down and analyze them yet. Tomorrow we should get done with plating the rest of our samples which means that hopefully we will count them on Friday. I have noticed that our time schedule is not going the way we had hoped. I thought we would be done with our dilutions and plating by now, but that has taken longer than we expected. Also our project seems like it is getting bigger. Today we decided to isolate and plate out some of the microbes found on the plates from the outflow and slough. I know that this will be beneficial, but I hope that we are not overwhelming ourselves with more work.

The experiment didn’t go exactly as we expected. We had to scale back to include fewer sample sites and fewer tests because of time constraints.
Working with a partner is invaluable. There’s always one of us available to be in the lab to keep things going.
The data we’re collecting is not exactly what we expected. That’s OK, though. Those unexpected results have forced me to re-examine the original design of the experiment and to consider what might explain the differences that we’re seeing. Perhaps the destination is not more important, or even as important, as the trip itself.

The sampling(fishing) has been a blast. However, I know the real research comes from the lab time. Jade and I really wish Becky was back because of all of her work she did while we were in the field. Our plates have some really strange growth patterns but Cody seems excited about them which is good for us because they aren’t making much since right now. We have seen some of what we expected in the different bacteria on different fish. We hope to be able to identify some of the bacteria with Cody’s help. Our project has almost grown out of proportion- there are so many directions one could take this project we’ve only scratched the surface.

I was gone to STAR Schools/Lesson Study all week….my group has done an awesome job and caught tons of fish (probably because I wasn’t there..lol).
Learned a lot at the STAR Schools workshop and I am excited to do a lesson study with the OSP group.
